In Why bees are Disappearing by Marla Spivak she discusses the affect humans have on bee pollination. We don’t realize the importance bees play on our daily consumption. When the endangerment of bees was in the media I was curious of the truthfulness of the headlines, not sure how right they were. Spivack included stories and pathos appeal that added to the effectiveness of her speech. I hope to be more conscious of the role bees play, and encourage my community to plant bee-friendly flowers.
Spivak's states that ⅔ of the world's pollination is done by bees, people are paid to pollinate flowers in places where bee population lacks. Bees are natural plant-feeders, but what happens when there are pesticides in the pollen. If the bees intake of the pollen doesn’t kill them it is later ingested by humans. “How much is it going to take to contaminate humans?” said Spivack. We are stripping the land of their food source, that will later terminate ours. As human beings we disturb every form of life, disturbing their survival.
I was interested by this talk because there was so much media controversy happening about the endangerment of bees. I was unsure if there was truth behind the scandal, not sure how and why bees were suddenly disappearing. Shocked to find out like everything else, we caused the problem. We are so eager to find easier ways to live our lives, ignoring the consequences.
We are able to see how selfish we are and how that affects the global status; Without bees we wouldn’t survive. The rise of population has decreased the land availability for wildlife. We are essentially killing ourselves wiping out the species that feed mankind.
I hope to plant bee-friendly flowers and encourage peers in my community to do the same. I was inspired to learn more about animal species that provide us with the gift of survival, and how we are killing our source of life.
